The old adage of "give them an inch and they'll take a mile" has certainly been proven true with homeowner associations. For more than four decades, the concept of mandatory membership associations has gone from a vehicle used ostensibly to alleviate some of the financial burden on allegedly cash strapped local municipalities to something that more closely resembles the depiction of a B rated sci fi prison on steroids. Over the years, the recorded declarations grew from a few minor restrictions to hundreds of pages of nonsensical provisions regulating everything and anything - from house colors, to dust on mailboxes, to the weight of pets, to precise shade of white curtains. And the more ridiculous these covenants became, the greater the opportunities for abuse by those in positions of power. But when is enough, enough? At what point do we decide that it's time to restore some dignity to homeowners and homeownership and reverse these trends?

On The Commons this week is Florida's very own, Representative Julio Robaina. Representative Robaina recognizes that the time has come to stop looking the other way when association issues are brought up. He has taken the time to listen to his constituents, to understand the problems and has worked tirelessly to restore balance, justice and sense in Florida's condo and homeowner associations. Please tune in to On The Commons. We'll find out how this indefatigable, energetic and always upbeat legislator is planning on protecting his constituents. You really won't want to miss this one.
